"Unfamiliar Master Study" for Study Challenge at
70 Minutes
Original was painted by Hugh Ramsay, and can be seen here
Title Nude Study, Old Man
Edit* Was in a rush to submit so didn't get to write much, but now I do:
Hugh Ramsay (25 May 1877 – 5 March 1906)
I recognize a lot of artists, suck at remembering names, but images do stick well, and this painter comes from one of my favorite periods. After the invention of camera and strict realism became their domain, and painters had to get more creative, but before they went off of the rails. I stumbled over Hugh Ramsay recently, and I had not seen his work before. Seeing as he grew up and lived in Australia explains some of it, but he had a few excellent paintings, interesting and striking composition, so how did he fly under the radar? And why so few paintings in general?
At age 16 he enrolled in an academy of arts, and was viewed as one their most talented student ever. In his mid twenties he arrived at the European continent, and things looked promising. Then he sickened. He went back home, and died a few years later. He never saw his 30th birthday. In less than 15 years he created some very good images and a lot of potential. If he had lived longer, who knows how much better he would have gotten. If he had lived longer and made a name for himself in Europe, he wouldn't be so unknown on the international scale.
I didn't have much time, so i did not choose one of his more complex images, so I'd suggest googling him and seeing him at his best
A toast for what was, and for what did not come to be.
