Description

I was going to put this up along with a few other works but as it's for a contest with a deadline right around the corner this one is being dropped a bit ahead of schedule.

I'm putting the finishing touches on my half of a trade that has been in the works for months now, and have three more pieces planned for other contests. It'll be hard to get it all done in time. Still, when I found this contest with just four days left until the deadline I got it into my head to colour a drawing of mine for it. Why I keep doing this to myself I'll never know :(

I spent two days on this, which is a bloody miracle compared to my usual progress, but then again I don't often have days where I do little else but work on one single thing either.

------------------------------
This is an entry for :iconyuumei: Go Green Contest

It does not fit entirely too neatly into the box of suspects for this one, but I hope it manages to slink into it anyway. As the original drawing wasn't related to this contest I had to apply some edits and a bit of mental flexibility to turn it the right way round.

Ehem, and this is, more or less, my makeshift thoughts behind this piece:

The general attitude amongst people concerned with the environment is that it's going belly up at an alarming rate. A lot of things are going wrong, and people either generally milling about, getting in the way, or putting their foot firmly down on the accelerator.

I'm a rather pessimistic person myself, so I don't hold out much hope that mankind will suddenly start to act rationally on a global scale instead of the self-interest of the near and immediate future. Placing my hopes on people with the future of the world is a bit like handing the keys to the henhouse to the fox.

But there is something else that is far more reliable, which is in fact nature itself. There are very few places on this earth so desolate, so entirely hostile, that nothing can survive. And when you look at what's swimming about in the deep seas you've got to admit that nature is in the habit of finding it's ways. Even if they are strange and somewhat disturbing ways.

This is part of what I hope the image hints at. Nature finding an unexpected way. The title Speaking Leaves suggest that the person is somehow acting/accepting or quite possibly volunteering for this, but I wanted the image itself to be ambiguous. Surprised, certainly, maybe even a bit shocked, but neither particularly happy or unhappy. Fair enough, he looks rather worried which can be a negative emotion, but I would argue it's understandable considering the situation ;)

After all, while nature will find it's way eventually, we won't necessarily like the process or the result. It won't wait around patiently for us to get ready for it. There's no pause button to give us time, and no save button to preserve the world as we like it, and there's certainly no brakes on this ride to stop it. One way or another we are involved whether we like it not.

The question is if you want to take action in trying to steer it towards something better or prettier or just stay passive and let nature happen to you. And when you consider Deep Sea Fishes, Antarctica and Sahara as what nature can get up to all on it's own, wouldn't you want to have a say? So go on, be a little greener ;)

Mind you, Antarctica and Sahara can be very beautiful in their ways, but I'd like a bit more variety in the long run :D

As for the piece itself, I'm rather happy with it. Except for his coat which is a bit dubious looking. I still appreciate and accept critique though :)

The concept behind this is pretty strong, and that really does come across in the image quite nicely. I think this is really an interesting twist on the 'green' concept, and is a refreshing break from the norm in that respect. The level of detail here is excellent especially in the leaves and in the berries, and really shows a level of consideration and dedication to the piece that, again, really come through in the finished image.

While the person is clearly the main focal point in the frame, there is enough going on that it keeps the eye moving throughout the frame. However, I think this piece over all may have benefited from more dramatic shading as it does look a little flat. It also seems like you may have used a texture preset for his shirt. I think this dampers its depth and makes it seem a little too busy. The white berries, however, are awesome.

The expression is very well executed. It could be interpreted in a few different ways due to the subtlety that you captured. Finally, I really like your choice of colors. The greens are subtle, and not obnoxious, and the white in the berries really provides much needed contrast to the image. Over all I think this is an excellent image with a lot a ton going for it.
