" Failure" for Speedy du Jour at :iconda-speedpaint:
60 Minutes

Quite a few people liked my study of a wold and the painterly texture look of it, all hail getwatchers by the way :D , and I pondered doing something like a tutorial for it. On reflection though, using a time limited piece wasn't the best base, and I'm not too happy with the result either. I do have progress images from it though, and if anyone really interested I could throw it together.

It wasn't an easy prompt to come up with something for. And my first idea was King Lear, but with some wiki searching I saw that Sarah Bernhardt played in Hamlet, as Hamlet in 1899. I think you would have to have balls, in a figurative sense, to do that, and Sarah was incredibly successful in her career. Her success and strength compared to the failure of Hamlet made an interesting combo, though there isn't anything of Sarah in my speed :(

I haven't read Hamlet myself, but I have heard literary lectures on it. (Yes I know, I do classic literature wrong) Something mentioned about Hamlet is his failures, and feelings of failure. Before his fathers death he was a student, and found the later demands of honor killing a heavy and strugglesome burden. A bookish type of fellow expected to do a fighters task. During the play the exploits of another person, Fortinbras, in a similar situation is told of, whose father had been killed and his son was now going to battle for him, serves as en example of a fighter doing a fighters "job"

His self proclaimed love for Ophelia also never really manifested in actions, even at her funeral he felt more compelled to argue with her brother about how he had loved her instead of giving her some actual respect.

And how it all ended is petty much a how-not-to when it comes to regicide. What a botched mess. It got helped along by other players, but the main cogs got into motion by Hamlets hands. In the end he technically did kill his uncle, but at the expense of everything that mattered.

This is an absolutely lovely piece! ♥ I adore the colors and lighting, as well as the painterly look. I really enjoyed your comment, as well! Mad props to Sarah Bernhardt!
