Ainu by Birgitte-Gustavsen Ainu by Birgitte-Gustavsen
"Islander" for Speedy du Jour at :iconda-speedpaint:
80 minutes

Tried to get more inventive with angel, though i could have pushed the boat and the people much more. I also didn't spend as much time as I would have wished on their clothes, particularly patterns.

Ainu are the indigenous people of Japan, living mainly on Hokkaido and the other islands that peters out further north of that. Not much of it survives though, no proper Ainu villages beyond what's been reconstructed for tourism, the language is considered endangered with about 100 speaker or as few as 15 left. How many Ainu there are left is also a tricky one, because of racism there are many that even to this day lie about their ethnicity.

Hi, and sorry for such a late reply. I've been gone for a long while, and am now trying to answer at least some of my many forlorn comments. Alas I know very little, save for the fact that they have a long history of being suppressed, and than even now some people don't want to tell that they are ainu in case they get discriminated against.

Tusen takk :)

And yes, I used a photo reference for the sky. The photo was taken of the sky from my window. I try to get some snapshots of it whenever it looks particularly interesting. I also did some light research of the Ainu but nothing was applied as direct reference so I don't know if you would consider it reference or just inspiration.

Sorry for the late reply, and thank you for such an overwhelming compliment, it's much appreciated. If words were cash I'd throw these onto my bed and roll around in them gleefully :D Mind you, I can think of a depressing amount of other speed paints better than mine ;)
